Weaving

Got scraps??? For today's technique, I will show you a simple way to maximize your scrapbook patterned papers by using your leftover scraps, mainly strips or rectangular pieces. In this project, we will use several pieces of colored patterned papers to produce a woven paper mat that we can use on a layout or a card.

Weaving is one of the most ancient forms of human creativity. Baskets and textiles would not have been possible without weaving. This project will give everyone the experience with working with the basic concept of weaving. The good thing is, we can also apply it to paper crafts!

Basic Materials:
  1. Cut strips of patterned papers from your leftover scraps. Since my example will be for a card, the strip size that I did is 6"x0.5". The number of strips will depend on how big you want your woven matt. (You can always add as you go along)
  2. liquid glue
  3. your basic folded card
  4. other embellishments
Before I started weaving, I distressed all the edges of my paper strips. This will add dimension and details to the project. Use a darker shade of Distress Inks to give the illusion of shadow and depth.

Start weaving, glue each section as you go along to make everything properly settled. You can go as long or as wide as you want too.

Once you have your desired size, just run it through your trimmer to cut the excess sides or you can just leave it as it is to show an unfinished project. That will definitely look great on a layout!

Here is my finished card using the Weaving Technique:

Cardstock: Bazzill
Patterned Papers: Echo Park Sweet Summertime & Cosm0 Cricket's Delovely
Journaling Card: "CELEBRATE" Elle's Studio Vintage Flashcard
Flower: Prima E Line Flowers - Yellow 300838
Button: GCD Melody Ross Vintage Button
Others from my stash: Fiskar border punch, distress inks, and twine

Painting on Mesh

For today's post I will show to you the effects of Shimmerz Paint on Mesh. I have altered a flower mesh by Prima and a strip of tulle cloth. I have used my ScrapThat!'s July Kit featuring Creative Imagination's Iron Orchid Designs line. This is one gorgeous kit that is a must have.

Painting mesh will require a little patience because if you desire for a 2 tone or 3 tone effect, you need to wait for each layer to dry before applying a new color. This is very easy with Shimmerz Paints because they are fast drying.

The 2 big flower mesh were originally color silver. I painted the first coat with Shimmerz Pearlz Sunny Side Up, then Espresso and finally This Spuds 4U.

The same technique was used on a trip of white tulle but this time I have only used Shimmerz Pearlz Espresso.

Aside from those, I enjoyed altering the butterlies and the small little yellow flowers and leaves using those 3 colors.

Special Day

Everyday is a s special day when I spend time with my DD Hannah. Seeing her grow up so fast brings tears to my eyes because I am so selfish when it comes to her. I can say that I am in love with my daughter. Just seeing her smile, listening to her laughter, feeling her warm embrace makes life so worth living. I have never thought that I can love somebody as much as I love her.

Here is a layout that I did using a photo of us taken last April 25, 2009. This was taken when we celebrated her 1st Birthday out of town at Caliraya lake. We rented the resort exclusively for us because she loves water so much. We were with my parents and siblings. It was something worth remembering and worth scrapping.

I have used my Nook June Kit featuring My Minds Eye So Sophie line with add-ons. The colors of the papers and the embellishment was perfect for our photo and it finally gave me the chance to scrap it. Check out this kit and June Member Special from My Scrapbook Nook here.

Thank you for dropping by! I really love reading all your comments.

Shimmerz Product Spotlight

The Shimmerz Product Spotlight. We think we have some pretty amazing products. A biased opinion perhaps, but we want to help keep our customers informed! It can be difficult to fully see the amazing color and shimmer that our products have via online and sometimes the product image can be deceiving. So here is a color that is often overlooked but totally deserves the spotlight: Shimmerz Vibez Vertigre! Rich, lustrous and coppery, this color will put the ooh-la-la into your next project! Chock full of the intensity that our Vibez products are known for, this color can stand on its own or blend seamlessly with any of our 15 other Vibez colors. Our other metallic based colors Rolling in the Hay and Penny Pincher are perfect partners as well!

My Brook!

Crate Paper's Brook Collection totally rocks!!!! The colors are my favorite and each of their embellishments are divine. I am just so in love with this collection and I can't get enough of it.

Here is one of the layouts I made using the Brook Collection. It features my nephew John Emmanuel. The color of this photograph blended well with Brook's colors and made everything perfect together.

The circles were actually screen overlay from Hambly. The word "TIME" was a rub-on from Crate Paper's Brook Collection.

Look how fun their chipboards, stickers and rub-ons are!

AC Thicker's alpha was perfect for this page!

8.5"x11"

I have been doing 8.5"x11" for a few months now but not too often. I do them from time to time if I want to create a simpler and direct layout. I think I have made around 20 layouts with this size. I love the variety and the small space.
Got some of my inspiration from the following blogs:

Here is a layout that I recently made using My Scrapbook Nook's June kit. This month's kit is designed with the warmth and relaxation of early summer in mind. We've blended the very best of the new My Mind's Eye, So Sophie papers to create a beautiful kit, sure to cause some major competition with the beautiful great out doors!

I have used a photo of Hannah taken late last year when we were at Trinoma Mall. It is one of our favorite hangout place because they have everything. Aside from stores, movie theaters, and restaurants, they have this structural made garden with lots of fountains. Hannah loves it there.

This gorgeous Bloomer Ribbon Petals are by Webster Pages available as add-on from the June Kit. I love them!

Using Templates to Create a Background

Just sharing a layout that I did using some gorgeous Shimmerz with a template. I have created my own background paper by simply spraying some Shimmerz Spritz and Vibez. I have coordinated my designed cardstock with My Scrapbook Nook's June Kit featuring papers from My Minds Eye new collection, So Sophie.

With a white cardstock, I usedmy Chatter Box Doodle Plate(Botanical) as my template. Sprayed 2 colours of Shimmerz Spritz (Sea Foam and Tuscan Sun) and 1 colour of Shimmerz Vibez (Grape Escape). Doing this technique is very recommendable if you want to create your own patterned paper from a plain cardstock. You can choose your own colours and play around.

The effect of the Spritz and Vibez is really gorgeous. After spraying on the template, I added a few more random spray without the template. It added softness to the patterns.

On the tree and felt bird, I have painted it with the New Shimmerz Pearlz Samrock and Sunny Side Up. I wanted this part to be the focalpoint of my layout thus making it shimmery and more vibrant.

Two!!!

It is really amazing watching Hannah grow up. I just love my job right now because it allows me to be with her most of the time. I can experience each milestone with her, guide her and support her as she grows up.

That was my inspiration when I made this layout using SD4U June Kit featuring BasicGrey's Kioshi line. The softness of the colors on this kit motivated me to create something very sentimental to me.

Materials Used: SD4U June Kit - Kioshi
Cardstock: Bazzill
Patterned Papers: BasicGrey Kioshi
Alpha: PinkPaislee
Diecut Sticker: BasicGrey Kioshi
Paint: Shimmerz Pearlz
Butterfly: Prima Marketing
Pins: Jenni Bowlin
Others: Fiskar Border Punch, Liquid Pearls, blings

Here are some details shot of this layout:

Flowers here are both handmade using patterned paper, Shimmerz Paint and Ribbons

Photographing My Layout

When I just started scrapbooking I thought that the process of creating a page was the hardest part, but I found photographing my finished layout more difficult because I was having a hard time capturing the real look of my page. The color was off, the alignment was slanted, and the photograph looks so different from the actual layout.

As I have tried several cameras I found out that the main key to get a good photograph of your layout is LIGHTING. Here are some tips that i have read and discovered:
  • the best time to photograph your layout outdoors is 1hr after sunrise and 1hr before sunset. This is the ideal time of the day because the sunlight is not that strong and the brightness is just right.
  • when taking photos indoors, take a photo in the afternoon when the sun is so bright. Find a room that has enough light. Make sure that the wall painting is white because colored rooms bounce back the colors to the layout.
  • you can also use a white cardboard to bounce the sunlight.Simply locate the sunlight in your room. Position the cardboard directly to the sunlight to bounce the light towards your layout.
  • if you want to use an artificial layout, create your own mini lightbox. You can find the intructions here: HOMEMADE LIGHT BOX. If I have time I definitely will make me one of those.
  • never photograph your layout using your flash or putting your layout directly to the sunlight! This will create strong shadows or the light might bounce back on the photo of your layout if you have used a glossy photo paper.
POSITIONING of your layout is very essential too. This will make it easier for you to crop your image later on using a photo editor software. Here are some tips on positioning your layouts
  • you can adhere your layout on a wall at eye-level
  • you can also use a photo stand
  • or simply place your photo on the floor (this is mostly what I do)
  • before taking a photograph of your layout, imagine a grid on the view box of your camera. Make sure that the spaces on all sides is parallel to the layout.

CAMERA. I think the best results is with a digital camera, preferably an DSLR camera like the Canon Digital Rebel. But if you don't have one it is okay to use a regular digital camera keeping in mind that the quality is different when using a DSLR. With good lighting you can still get a very decent photo of your layout.
  • Set your camera to Auto Depth of Field setting and shoot. The auto depth of field keeps all elements equally important visually, which makes the text and photographs all stay focused.
  • Use a tripod if your speed is below 100 to make your photo sharp.
  • ISO must be set not higher than 400. The higher the ISO the greater chance of getting grains-look on your photograph
  • Instead of just taking one photo of your layout, take several. It's easy to delete anyway. This will allow you to capture the perfect photo.
PHOTO EDITING SOFTWARE. After photographing your layout, it is still important to add some minor adjustment to your photograph by using some photo editing software. I actually use 2 software, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Usually I use Lightroom to edit the colors because it has the capability to adjust the colors individually unlike Photoshop. If you edit a color on Photoshop it will adjust the entire photo and make it all green for example. In Lightroom it only adjust the green colors thus you can make it more vibrant or pale. I do them first on Lightroom then I just do the cropping or cleaning(removing spots) on Photoshop.

Whatever photo editor software you use, just adjust the levels, brightness, contrast or color balance to get your desired outcome. Crop it! I suggest you place your layout near you so that you can use it as guide as you do some adjustment. Make it look like as close to the actual layout.

You're done! You can now upload your layout online!

Hope I was able to help you get an idea on how I photograph my layouts.
